Body Check - CardioCheck Medical science has achieved a remarkable breakthrough in the fight against cardiovascular disease - now the number one cause of serious illness and premature death in the UK CardioCheck can alert you to the risk of suffering a heart attack or stoke by checking the health of your arteries - all in a few minutes CardioTrack can measure the level of stiffness or elasticity in your main arteries by shining a harmless beam of light through your finger. Data is then transmitted directly to the CardioTrack hand-held computer, which calculates the condition of your arteries using an exciting new technology called Pulse Wave Analysis. Put simply, the more flexible and elastic your arteries, the better. Healthy arteries expand and briefly store blood from each heartbeat, thereby helping the heart move blood to all areas of the body. Unhealthy or diseased arteries are usually stiff or hardened, placing extra strain on the heart and other vital organs. CardioCheck is a revolutionary device that provides an early warning system to detect symptoms before they become serious. It uses an infra-red beam to measure changes in the blood volume features of the main pulse with the reflected pulse (which occur as a result of the narrowing of the arteries). Readings are taken over a short period, usually 10 seconds, and two statistics are calculated. The two key statistics given by the device are the:-
S.I. (Stiffness Index) This means stiff arteries that develop with age and are a key factor in cardiovascular disease risk.
R.I. (Reflection Index) This is an indicator of vascular tone, which is a good indicator of inflammation associated with the early symptoms of arteriosclerosis. CardioCheck compares the Stiffness Index with an existing database on the machine to give an estimate of vascular age. This statistic may cause people to respond particularly if their readings are less than ideal.
The good news is that by y making simple lifestyle and dietary changes, the risks of developing cardio-vascular disease may be reduced
