CoQ10

There has been a recent wave of interest in the health benefits of CoQ10 – with clinical trials into it's nutritive value for a number of health problems. This is in addition to research into the use of CoQ10 in the prevention of mitochondrial morbidity, (i.e supporting  mitochondrial health) which is strongly linked to neural and brain cell ageing and age-related cognitive decline.

There is strong evidence of the benefits of CoQ10 in cardiovascular health and other problems. A lack of co-enzyme Q10 has been associated with periodental (gum) disease.

It is known that statins (used to help control cholesterol) interfer with the production of COQ10 in the cells.

The benefits associated with elevated levels of CoQ10 (ubiquinone) should not be surprising as it is a ubiquitous component of all our cells, sometimes referred to as 'the energy factory of our cells'. It is a potent antioxidant.

The problem with CoQ10 supplementation is often the very poor bio-availability caused by poor absorption in the gut because the CoQ10 molecule is very large and highly lipophilic, making it difficult to emulsify and incorporate into micelles (hard to absorb efficiently)  It is the way a product absorbs into the system (bio-availability) that is such an important factor.
