Description Organic Tea Tree   Melaleuca alternifolia Stimulating A small tree, native to Australia, it grows mainly in New South Wales.  It thrives in dense thickets in marshes and is therefore quite hazardous to harvest. The essential oil is distilled from the leaves and has a strong, warm, medicinal aroma.  The Aboriginal people of Australia have used it throughout history and its fame grew when it was supplied to the Army and Australian Navy during the last war.  Impressive results from its use in the medical world have been reported and it is now the subject of intense scientific research. In 1955 the American Dispensary reported that Tea Tree essential oil was actively germicidal with an antiseptic action ten times greater than carbolic acid and research in Australia has shown it to have a powerful action against virulent organisms.  It also has a very powerful anti-bacterial and anti-fungal action. It's use has become widespread and is expected to become an important part of medical care. It is used in the treatment of cold and respiratory infections and fungal infections such as Athletes Foot.  It is being researched with the virus which causes Herpes.
